From Edmund Blümm, November 2004 D-97950 Gerchsheim Hello Erwin, we were absolutely overwhelmed by the hospitality and genuineness of our hosts Aronel and Cornelia. We had good weather too. Under the guidance of Aronel, my son Josef experienced a tremendous feeling of freedom exploring the countryside with the 4-wheel drive. In the midst of this, we discovered that one of the gear wheels was worn. Not a problem - off to the hydraulics factory in Stei, where they made a new gear wheel for just EUR 12 - and Aronel sacrificed a whole day just for that. And while we were waiting, a local woman invited us into her home. Then we had starting problems again with the 4-wheel drive; Aronel fetched a grubby-looking mechanic, who first of all had to drink a beer, as he had never seen such a machine before. Then they set to work, and by night and by torchlight they had managed to sort it out. And then the meal in the open air with the fantastic weather! And the price of diesel at 65.- cent a litre is great. You notice that the people are opening up to the west and are receptive to visitors - how long will they be able to maintain their authenticity? For me and for my 11-year-old son the journey was an absolute adventure of discovery with many unforgettable impressions. The tourist potential of Romania has not yet been discovered by the majority in the West and it will be interesting virgin territory for the future. We will remain in contact by phone. If the weather permits, we will see each other before Christmas, otherwise at the latest at Easter in 2005, when I will bring both of my sons with me. I sincerely look forward to meeting up soon in person. Romania will also be an interesting destination for older travellers in the future, as it is ideal winding down and relaxing. All the best, Edmund |
